Blockbuster Afghan


GAUGE:

16 sts + 32 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

NOTES:

1. Pick up and bind off stitches on RS rows unless indicated otherwise.
2. Twist yarns around each other when changing colors to prevent holes.
3. Circular needle is used to accommodate large number of stitches. Work back and forth in rows, as if working on straight needles.


AFGHAN

Block 1

With A, cast on 48 sts.

Knit 96 rows (48 Garter st ridges). Bind off.

Block 2

With B, pick up and k48 sts evenly spaced along row ends of right edge of Block 1. Knit 48 rows (24 Garter st ridges). Bind off.

Block 3

With C, pick up and k24 sts along row ends of Block 2 and 48 sts along bound-off edge of Block 1 – 72 sts. Knit 96 rows (48 Garter st ridges). Bind off.

Block 4

With D, pick up and k48 sts along bound-off edge of Block 2 and 48 sts along row ends of Block 3 – 96 sts. Knit 96 rows (48 Garter st ridges). Bind off.

Block 5

With B, pick up and k48 sts along row ends of Block 4 and 72 sts along bound-off edge of Block 3 – 120 sts. Knit 48 rows (24 Garter st ridges). Bind off.

Block 6

With B, pick up and k96 sts along bound-off edge of Block 4 and 24 sts along row ends of Block 5 – 120 sts. Knit 48 rows (24 Garter st ridges). Bind off.

Block 7

With C, pick up and k24 sts along row ends of Block 6 and 120 sts along bound-off edge of Block 5 – 144 sts. Knit 96 rows (48 Garter st ridges). Bind off.

Block 8

With A, pick up and k120 sts along bound-off edge of Block 6 and 48 sts along row ends of Block 7 – 168 sts. Knit 96 rows (48 Garter st ridges). Bind off.

Block 9

With B, pick up and k48 sts along cast-on edge of Block 1, 24 sts along row ends of Block 2, 24 sts along row ends of Block 4. Drop B and join D, pick up and k remaining 24 sts along row ends of Block 4, 24 sts along row ends of Block 6 and 48 sts along row ends of Block 8 – 192 sts. Knit 144 rows (72 Garter st ridges), keeping in colors as established. Bind off.

FINISHING

Border

From wrong side with D, pick up and k1 st in each bound-off st or end of row along one edge of afghan. Knit 8 rows (4 Garter st ridges), increasing 1 st at each edge of every RS row. Repeat for each side.

Sew Border corners together. Weave in ends.
